Police have arrested a duo of individuals in connection with a mobile phone discovered concealed within the parliamentary chamber, which was reportedly designed to emit sex noises during the prime minister’s questions.
The device was located close to the frontbench during a routine sweep of the hall. Authorities suspect it was planned to disrupt the regular debate between political leaders in September.
A police spokesperson stated, “Around mid-morning on that specific date, a mobile phone was discovered while conducting a routine search of the House of Commons chamber.”
Investigations led officers to believe that the phone was purposely placed in a location with the aim of causing disruption to business in the chamber.
Heightened precautions were implemented in the House of Commons after the device was discovered. Sound-guided visits and escorted visits were called off, and there was reduced access to the Commons chamber.
The House of Lords followed suit to reduce access to the their debating area “as a precautionary measure.”
The spokesperson noted, “Enquiries remain ongoing, and we continue to keep the speaker and clerk up to date with our investigation.”
This incident is being regarded as grave as it represents a major breach of legislative safety. This device was found while numerous guards based in Westminster were on strike over pay and conditions.
As a result, the public were banned from the legislative grounds. Labor representatives stated that the strike proceeded due to reduction of annual leave entitlements, unchanged salaries, and an ethnicity pay gap.
