Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
