Arsenal's Controversial Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Is Ending This Coming Year

Arsenal Football Club has declared that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.

Context and Criticism

The arrangement, reportedly valued at around ÂŁ10m per year, was first established and has since faced significant scrutiny.

Such scrutiny arises from the country's reported backing for the M23 forces in persistent fighting in the eastern region of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In February, Arsenal faced allegations of issuing a severe rebuff to the government of the DRC by declining to meet with Congolese diplomat ThérÚse Wagner to talk about the deal.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda functions as an arm of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a state institution.

It is widely believed that Arsenal entered into and continued this partnership mainly to grow their following across the continent.

However, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “collectively determined” to go their separate ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the primary aims of the partnership – promoting conservation and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to explore Rwanda, and creating a lasting foundation for tourism growth,” declared an club announcement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and host more global sporting events while delivering grassroots football initiatives that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches improve their techniques and encourage more involvement in sports throughout the nation.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, characterized the deal as a “significant journey” and asserted it had been “propelling” the club's goals.

However, this perspective was not shared by a segment of the club's followers, with the protest movement Gunners for Peace holding rallies outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in April's conclusion.

Demonstrators showed a banner that read “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and handed out sleeves to cover up the partnership emblem on uniforms.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

In the same month, PSG extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

At the same time, the Spanish club entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has led to the logo being carried on the Madrid-based team's first-team and women's team jerseys.
