The UK's Fabio Wardley is set to be promoted to WBO heavyweight champion after the Ukrainian champion chose to vacate his world title
This situation arises after the champion told boxing authorities he would not proceed with a mandatory title defence against Wardley
The championship body announced that Usyk chose to vacate his title after thoughtful consideration"
The Ukrainian maintains the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles, having defeated Daniel Dubois at the national stadium in the summer month to become a double undisputed champion
He first became the four-belt undisputed champion in spring 2024 by overcoming Tyson Fury, before vacating another belt five weeks later and opting out of facing the required opponent
"Boxing official Gustavo Olivieri described Usyk as exceptional in a official release"
"The WBO extends its sincere admiration and thanks to Usyk, an undefeated, two-division WBO undisputed world champion"
"His achievements mark one of the most extraordinary and historic of the contemporary boxing period"
The WBO added that its doors "will always remain open Usyk and his team"
Usyk secured the WBO belt in two years ago by overcoming Joshua and went on to successfully defend multiple times
In summer, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a mandatory defence against temporary title holder Parker, only for a back injury sustained by Usyk to cause the delay of the fight
But Wardley, 30, took the interim title from Parker with a significant shock in the 11th round at London's O2 Arena recently and was mandated to face Usyk before the month's conclusion
The championship body still needs to verify Wardley's promotion but his representative believes it is a done deal
"Britain has a recent title holder and a emerging fighting personality"
"One of the most incredible stories throughout my decades as a sports manager and I could not be prouder of Fabio Wardley"
"Major contests coming up for next year as he defends his WBO belt and establishes his place in the boxing world"
Wardley only began boxing at twenty years old, coming through the unlicensed white-collar scene and has had only 21 pro bouts
