The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
