Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then located many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
An important representative commented the attack rendered him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
