NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his plan to back former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now intends to appear with the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.
“It is crucial to really wake up the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how critical this race is,” the mayor remarked.
He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has made headlines worldwide and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.
During a separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious mayoral debate.
