Liverpool's head coach stated he needed to “look at myself” after Liverpool suffered a sixth loss in 7 Premier League games at home against Nottingham Forest and insisted he would find a solution out of the title holders' slump.
Nottingham Forest, in the relegation zone before kick off, produced the biggest victory at Anfield in their club records as the Merseyside club slipped to an eighth defeat in eleven matches in all competitions. The British record signing, the Swedish striker, was again unnoticeable and the home side contended the defender's first goal ought to have been ruled out for similar reasons to Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed effort against City before the national team pause. But the manager admitted the responsibility stopped with him and offered no alibis.
“No one wants to listen to me now talking about refereeing decisions if you lose 3-0 in your own stadium to Nottingham Forest,” said the Reds' boss. “I ought to look at myself initially and my team, but it does show you how a goal can alter the flow of a match. Before I was just hoping for us to score a strike. Later we barely created anything.
“Of course there is a path forward, especially with the quality footballers we have. No matter if you triumph or are beaten when you look back you are always considering: ‘In which areas can we improve, in what aspects can we make changes?’ but that is something else from doubting yourself.
“I want to emphasise I am responsible for the present defeats. You are responsible when you are winning but also liable when you are defeated. I can never come up with enough reasons for us to have the results we have. That is far from acceptable and I am responsible for that.”
Liverpool’s performance unravelled as Slot made multiple offensive substitutions when pursuing the match. “It was the same on the road at Forest the previous campaign,” he said. “I substituted the French defender off and brought on [Diogo] Jota and he found the net immediately to equalize at 1-1. At that time it was courageous, now it’s probably stupid.”
The Anfield side last lost two successive at Anfield league games against Nottingham Forest in 1963. The most recent occasion they lost back-to-back league matches by a three-goal margin was in the mid-60s.
The manager commented: “It was very bad. Playing on home soil, losing 3-0 regardless of which opponent you face is a terrible result. Unexpected if you look at the opening 30 minutes of the match. I haven’t seen us producing so much in the opening half-hour perhaps the whole campaign, and the first time they arrived in our box they found the back of the net.
“It wasn’t against Manchester City, but in all other fixture we have been the controlling team and were able to create chances. Lately it is almost consistently that we fail to convert our chances and the ones we allow find the net.”
