The gravest projected effects of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by experts, ranging from a searing 4C rise in mean temperatures to a two-metre rise in ocean levels. Another scenario predicts a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact agriculture and energy demand.

Possible Events, Not Forecasts

These effects, some of which are linked to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as improbable but credible. The scientists stated that these scenarios plugged a hole in risk assessment that had left the UK unprepared for extreme outcomes.

"The severe weather events we have outlined aren’t predictions, but they are credible," commented Nigel Arnell who oversaw the research. "The nation has been formulating policy without the tools to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now supplied planners what they need to get ready for environmental results they hope never happen, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Extreme Weather Possibilities

A second set of severe models details the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that temperatures could rocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be three times standard measurements.

The chance of the extreme scenarios coming to pass could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what action will be implemented to address climate change and how the planet's climate will react. This research was described as similar to national security risk assessments or resilience checks for financial systems.

  • Four-Degree Warming: Planetary heating rising well above 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts fails or if vicious cycles including the Amazon basin dying emit its vast reserves of carbon. This would cause extreme and prolonged heatwaves and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the AMOC, is slowing down and losing stability due to climate change. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be drastically changed," noted the professor.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if polar ice in the Arctic and Antarctic melt abruptly, flooding seaside communities. In contrast to the other scenarios, this possibility is already known by planners.
  • Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is drastically reduced. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from burning coal reflect sunlight from warming the ground.

The severe models could be used to inform the building of critical national infrastructure, such as expanded cities, energy plants and flood defences. Knowledge about these future hazards could also accelerate the drive to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The analysis formulated the extreme models using a combination of real-world events, climate models and climate physics. The possibilities omit international cascading effects such as the global food shortages and geopolitical instability.

This work was initiated as part of a national adaptation planning initiative. Independent analyses have stated that too little consideration was being given to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

The government's climate advisors has said that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the risks for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "very weak" by some observers.
