Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Uninterrupted Crude Oil Supplies to India in Defiance of Washington Demands

During a unambiguous statement to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to maintain “uninterrupted” supplies of crude oil to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in Delhi and affirmed their bilateral ties were “immune to outside influence.”

A Signal Directed at the West

This affirmation, issued after the annual summit, seemed to be a pointed rebuke at western countries, that have tried to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding relations with Moscow. This comes is in response to previous US actions, including the introduction of trade penalties against Indian goods over its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.

“Our nation is a dependable source of energy resources and everything needed for the advancement of India’s economy,” the Russian president said. “We are ready to keep ensuring the steady delivery of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not referencing crude explicitly, reinforced the theme by stating that “energy security has been a key and important foundation of the India-Russia alliance.”

Defying American Pressure

Before the summit, during a television interview, Putin had criticized Washington's stance regarding India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “If the US has the right to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India enjoy the equivalent access?”

This trip was his first journey to India since the beginning of the situation in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a visible show to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders was undisturbed.

An Unusual Reception

Taking an notable gesture, Modi personally greeted Putin right off the plane. The two exchanged a hearty embrace as old friends before enjoying a closed-door supper the night before the summit.

Modi later described India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and said it was “built on shared respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Defence and Economic Ties

The meeting yielded multiple significant pacts in the fields of military and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which targets to increase twofold commerce to a hundred billion USD per year by the target year.

Additionally agreed to restructure their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia is still India's primary exporter of weapons, its share has declined over the past decade as India aims to broaden its supply base.

The official release stressed cooperation in the co-development of cutting-edge military systems, although specific details of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were omitted.

Overall, both nations affirmed that during the “present intricate, strained, and volatile global landscape, their relationship continue to be durable to outside forces.”
