The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."
The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."
He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
