The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
