The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
