Van de Ven Double Halts Everton's Unbeaten Streak at New Home Ground

The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.
