Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid history in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek return to secure a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.
After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
